EXPLORATION WITH COIR FELT AND COIR ROPE

Compressed coir rope bag. The Bag was created in three parts and stitched using basic cobbler tools.

These clutch bags are made of compressed rubberized coir felt sheets. Edges finished off with buttonhole stitch
Plain coir felt with stitches running across to hold the fiber in place.
Using macrame technique on coir rope to create a woven appearance.
PROPOSED ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE FOR COIR INDUSTRY
The coir industry in India was a largely manual which has now evolved to a very mechanized one. After my visit to a coir production center in Gubbi , Tumkuru I realized that the industrial set up undervalued skills of the employees and the jobs involved trivial tasks like feeding raw material into the machinery. I wanted to design a system that would be skill-centric.
The proposed system involves
1.Taking from the REZ model setting up of coir work centers in any rural location that has access to raw materials .
2.The coir work center functions as an independent unit where the members can decide what they want to produce and how and where they want to sell it.
3.The work centers are not dependent on a single farmer for raw material. The sources of coir felt and rope are multiple which makes it easier for sustained production
4.The network link the system to a larger network of farmers and co-operatives which helps as a channel of knowledge, technical advancement and marketing opportunities
5.The by products of coir- coco peat are circulated back to the farmers which will help them in the form of soil supplements. Allows the farmer to also expand and reduce dependency on land, shift to aquaponics,
6.The farmers are closely linked to the various production channels which encourages them to supply more husks instead of burning them for fuel.
7.The system also aims at creating more jobs and entering the lifestyle accessories, textile, furniture markets.
8.The system allows the center to cater to orders from independent organizations that care about sustainable ways of life. These organizations will be able to better market the products and provide employment opportunities
.
